Physics Behind The Robot

I am in an Aerospace design class and we are looking at something similar to this concept. I know the drive mechanism is proprietary but could you explain some of the physics behind it? Is the motor mounted to a shaft that is free to rotate? Or is the shaft fixed to the outside and the motor? Just something simple so we could do some analysis on the power savings versus a traditional rover.
